Not illustrated. 1902 Excerpt: ...the wheels, the space taken up by the drop pit could be utilized for a locomotive under repairs, and this change in the method of doing the work enabled us to increase the capacity of the same shops 18 per cent without in any way extending the buildings. With this increase in the number of locomotives which the shops would hold and the addition of some new machinery in the place of old and a small increase in force, the total output of these particular shops was increased 40 per cent; in other words, these few changes, which were comparatively inexpensive, enabled the same shops to turn out 40 per cent more locomotives without any changes in the buildings. The Chairman: I wish to announce that Mr. Damon is making notes on the discussion of his paper, and will make his reply after all have finished. Mr. T. A. Lawes (C. & E. I. R. R.): Referring to the shop plan presented by Mr. Damon, there is much to commend, and it seems to me there are few criticisms to make. In the first place, the blacksmith shop is a hot proposition during July and August, and therefore it should be separated from the machine shop. I think the shop should be isolated and should be at least 50 feet from the machine shop. The planing mill and the lumber yard should be reversed, putting the latter next to the repair tracks. The modern plan is to run the lumber through the planing mill and keep it going and get it out nearest the place where you want to use the lumber. The repair tracks should be separated far enough to put the wheel house and scrap bins in the casting shed, in the center of the repair tracks, so as to distribute the castings and wheels from some central point.
